The new Armani/Casa Claire armchair with striking curved armrests and pouf with curved feet

Giorgio Armani talks to KBB about his stunning Armani/Casa collection

Giorgio Armani says he is on a quest for “uniqueness, preciousness and exclusivity.” It has been a lifelong mission that has shaped the razor-sharp public image of his iconic fashion label and, more recently, his unique vision for living spaces launched in 2000 – Armani/Casa. Armani’s world may be alien to yours or mine, but his ambition is recognisable; the belief that customers should be treated as individuals, “rather than anonymous, abstract clientele.”

Pictured is Armani's new Beethoven sofa with a curved armrest and frame in polished Santos rosewood veneer. Also shown is the Chagall side table available in a brown oak or polished Santos rosewood finish, and the Charlie coffee table in glossy Santos rosewood with a matt-black plinth

He argues that now is the perfect time to embrace his philosophy. “In the context of the current economic crisis, and as a response to the mass-production, standardisation and homogenisation of design styles we have seen in recent years, I feel that we need to elevate the quality of products and make them special and unique. We should treat them as if they were jewels or artworks.”

At Armani this means sourcing materials that exude pure elegance. A sneak preview of his latest range reveals richly hued rosewood for the surfaces of tables, liquid metal or black nickel used to coat side tables and lamps, or bronze-coloured leather with a luxurious shagreen-effect print.

Crucially, each piece of the collection bears the unmistakable mark of the man himself. And how could it fail not to? “Armani/Casa embodies my aesthetic and my ideal of interior design, so much so that when I am designing an item, it is as if I were choosing, each time, a new piece of furniture or an accessory for my own home,” Armani explains. “What characterises Armani/Casa is the atmosphere it creates within a space; it is pure, essential and rigorous, yet also warm and welcoming. In this way the effect I achieve with Armani/Casa is similar to that which I aim to create with an Armani dress.”

Armani’s impact on the landscape of design is unequalled. Cutting his teeth as an assistant designer at Nino Cerruit before establishing his own label in 1974, he quickly became the king of the catwalk with an elite worldwide following. The launch of Armani/Casa has no doubt helped to cement the label’s reputation as a lifestyle brand and for Armani it is an opportunity to conquer another area of design. “After almost 10 years since its creation, Armani/Casa now has a very definite look and iconic products that are immediately recognised as mine.”
