Steam ovens

There are many benefits to steam cooking and a variety of steam-enabled appliances to choose from.

  • Whether you choose a dedicated steam oven or a combination steam oven with steam function will depend on the space available and your cooking preferences. Steam cooking not only improves the flavour, appearance and taste of dishes but it also helps to preserve the vitamins and minerals while making meals more succulent. Compared with fan only cooking, steam also gives superior results when baking cakes, pastries, quiches and bread. A dedicated steam oven tends to have a smaller cavity than conventional ovens at around 29 litres and will either have its own water tank or will need to be plumbed in. Pre-set temperatures enable you to do everything from melting chocolate to defrosting whole fish. These are ideal for more experienced cooks or those who have room to include a separate single or double oven.

Look for added features such as touch controls and an audible alarm that lets you know when the water reservoir (on water tank models) is empty. For the best of both worlds, a combination steam model allows you to do conventional cooking, as well as steam cooking. These tend to have a bigger capacity than steam-only ovens and many designs come with pre-set recipes including food weight and temperature for best results – a good choice if you’ve never used a steam oven before.

Look for injection steam systems, where the water is heated by an element in the tank and then injected directly into the oven cavity when it reaches the correct temperature for consistent results.

  • For pure steam cooking, the DOV1145X 45cm compact steam oven from De Dietrich is easy to install with no need for plumbing, so it can be situated anywhere in your kitchen layout. With eight pre-set temperature settings, this dedicated steam oven costs £950 and can be used to cook everything from meat and fish to desserts, soups and starters. It is pictured with the DED1145X coffee machine, £1500.
